Caps off to New Era sportswear’s new CCTV security system.

New Era, the world’s leading manufacturer and retailer of sport and lifestyle headwear, has recently asked Chiltern Technology Ltd to design and install CCTV security systems at it’s new London stores. One store is in London’s vibrant Carnaby Street and the other is at Westfield Shopping Mall, in Stratford City near the busy Olympic Park.

New Era, founded in the 1920s, originally produced Gatsby caps. In the 1950s, the family-run company developed its first on-field caps for US Major League baseball teams. Since then the business has grown to be a global sports and lifestyle headwear manufacturer and retailer. The original 59FIFTY, signature cap, with its recognisable, iconic silhouette, remains a brand-leader today.

It was vital for New Era to protect stock, staff and customers with its CCTV system, off-setting some costs with reduced insurance premiums. All the stock, which includes the caps, a range of further headwear and branded apparel, is high-end and desirable. The caps are intricately made, with exceptional attention to detail and are well-sought after across the globe. They are also small and light, making stock shrinkage a high risk.

Chiltern Technology Ltd has supplied and supported all New Era’s UK security systems for over ten years. This long-standing and proven track record has meant the retailer trusted Chiltern to design individual CCTV security systems to meet each store’s specific needs. The Stratford City store is 950 square feet, whilst Carnaby Street measures 1540 square feet over two floors.

In the New Era Carnaby St store, Chiltern installed eight, 2MP Hikvision Mini Domes and a Wavestore Flint 16 channel, hybrid NVR. In the Stratford New Era store, six miniature 2MP Avigilon eye ball cameras and a Wavestore Rock 32 channel, hybrid NVR were installed.

One of New Era’s key requirements was that security operators could access CCTV images rapidly. Wavestore products are designed to manage and store video efficiently, but with powerful search functionality for immediate data retrieval.

Graham Johnson, MD of Chiltern Technology Ltd explained, “We have used Wavestore control systems because they offer an excellent security platform for retailers like New Era. They record footage from all the store CCTV cameras, in real-time, at high frame rates with exceptional detail. Most importantly, they use ultra-reliable, Linux-based NVRs giving operators fast access to both recorded and live footage, from each store camera, simultaneously. Operators are able to make an immediate and appropriate response to site events. The innovative data export feature provides evidential CCTV footage for the police or other users. The NVRs also allow for expansion, so more cameras can be added to the system quickly and easily, should a site grow or require greater coverage.”

New Era is pleased with the new security systems. Alan Jones, CFO of New Era commented, “It was essential that we could view cameras in real-time, whilst also searching and retrieving stored footage. This benefits the security and management of our stores. “

As happy customers leave New Era stores with the very highest quality headwear and apparel, the company can rest assured that its stock, employees and customers continue to be safe and well-protected.
